Sorry I have been so quite on this issue, I have been trying to complete a project and handle questions regarding this issue. Today I met with Mr. Sieger, Shelly Murphy (Mako Education Foundation President), and Cindi Junkel (Mako Education Foundation Vice President). The goal of the meeting was to discuss points regarding the effects of re-designating Vista del Mar to a K-8 school vs. the K-5 and 6-8 schools as it is now. Prior to our meeting I had done some analysis based on the numbers given to the Regional Committee.
I came up with a solution that would allow all Talega students to attend Vista del Mar Elementary school as well as keep Vista del Mar Middle intact. Based on the numbers our elementary enrollment is 867 for just Talega. I also noticed that the current first grade class peaks our attendance at 194 first graders then the numbers drop off again, kindergarten is at 151 Talega students. Middle School is at 631 students and we peak at 761 students when the current 3rd grade class is in 8th grade. The long and short of it is that we would be within the maximum capacity of the number of students the school can handle. It will be rough, but no rougher than this year. The 725-750 student elementary school maximum was at the request of the principal Mr. Young. I believe that if we adjust this number upward by 100-150 students we can handle the load.
In the meeting I found out that the above plan is being considered as the compromise plan. It was also confirmed that Lobo's numbers were off by approximate 200 students, meaning they would be impacted if students were sent to Lobo. The four options that are coming out tomorrow (yes this is early) are as follows (I do not know the details, but here is the gist):
1. Reset max. number of elementary students to handle all Talega (1500) students & leave the middle school as it is.
2. Year round track.
3. Regional Committee recommendation to move Zone 5 of Talega (1500) or the Talega 12 to Lobo. Leave middle school as it is.
4. Re-designate VDM to K-8
Of all the options, option 4 is the worst. I am currently working on a document with Cindi and Shelly to explain why the switch is bad. So look for more information in the net 24 hours.
So tomorrow check the CUSD website for more information form the district. They are suppose to have complete statistics and rationalization behind each option (http://www.capousd.org/attend0809.htm). Also check the Seaside blog at http://seasideoftalega.blogspot.com/
That's all for now.
